Kim-Jang aka Kimchi Workshop

Date: Saturday 20 April 2024
Time: 13:00 - 18:00

Kim-Jang a.k.a. Kimchi Workshop by Kimchi4Palestine

Come join our first community soli Kim-Jang a.k.a. the Kimchi Workshop! We will make delicious, vegan Kimchi together, which will then be sold at events to raise funds. For this batch of Kimchi, all of the proceeds will go to support a dear Palestinian friend of ours from Gaza, who lives in Berlin and recently survived an assault from domestic violence.

‘Kim-Jang’ means the event of making kimchi. Traditionally in the Korean peninsula neighbors regularly gathered around to make a big patch of Kimchi together, especially in preparation for the winter, where fresh vegetables were scarce. We want to reignite the collective spirit of kimchi-making and explore the potential of Kimchi as a tool of collective care.

The workshop will start with a short input by the facilitators on the cultural history of Kimchi through an anti-colonial lens. We will bring some pre-made Kimchi which you can taste with warm rice and tofu. Then we will get to the action of making a big amount of vegan Kimchi together. This includes witnessing the two stages of fermentation process, making the sauce, mixing it with the cabbage and packing them. You can of course take some home for yourself. Otherwise the Kimchi we make together will be sold at soli events to raise funds for supporting our friend.

Kimchi is full of spices, boosts immune system and contains diverse microorganisms that make our guts super happy! Served with warm rice, optionally with some Kim (roasted seaweed) and fried egg (for egg-eaters out there), can be so comforting…
